How to Create and Keep up with Student Portfolios
As we live in the process throughout the day we flow with our class. With that, it can be harder to schedule time to do tasks such as “portfolio time”. In order to keep up with our documentation we need to find a way to make it part of our process. Here is an easy way to do that.
The most effective way to do a portfolio post is right in the moment. Continuously take pictures throughout the day. If someone says something that is pertinent to the picture you take (maybe they said a phrase or described what was happening). Right then, pull up a text or an email to type the quote and attach the picture then send it. This allows us to save time from handwriting and then needing to type it later. It also saves us from trying to remember what exactly was happening. When you do get time you can sit down to create a more general project work or developmental description to apply to all children’s portfolios that month if it is necessary.
Tracking what you have done is important as well. This helps us ensure we are checking in with each child and on track for the month. The easiest way to do this is with a “sign in” sheet. Cross off the students you have done that month, and then you can highlight those you still need to be aware of.
