Hey Guys! We had a few kids out of town this week,  or sick that missed their child’s day so we decided to make retakes on Tuesday 3/11. I will contact you if we scheduled your child for retakes so you can dress them like you want them. Dawndra (the photographer) is working diligently to get photos edited and ordered and we will get them back ASAP. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Hand, foot and mouth

A few children in our acclimation and horizon classrooms have recently had Hand foot and mouth, I wanted to pass on some info about it so everyone is informed. It is a very common childhood disease, which we do not disclude children from coming to school when they have it unless they are inconsolable and having a hard time in our group setting. The following is info per our Public Health nurse. Thank you!

Hand-foot-mouth disease

Coxsackievirus infection

Last reviewed: August 7, 2011.

Hand-foot-mouth disease is a relatively common infection viral infection that usually begins in the throat.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is most commonly caused by coxsackievirus A16, a member of the enterovirus family.
The disease is not spread from pets, but it can be spread by person to person. You may catch it if you come into direct contact with nose and throat discharges, saliva, fluid from blisters, or the stools of an infected person. You are most contagious the first week you have the disease.
The time between infection and the development of symptoms is about 3 – 7 days.
The most important risk factor is age. The infection occurs most often in children under age 10, but can be seen in adolescents and occasionally adults. The outbreaks occur most often in the summer and early fall.

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Rash with very small blisters on hands, feet, and diaper area; may be tender or painful if pressed
  • Sore throat
  • Ulcers in the throat (including tonsils), mouth, and tongue

Signs and tests

A history of recent illness and a physical examination, demonstrating the characteristic vesicles on the hands and feet, are usually sufficient to diagnose the disease.

There is no specific treatment for the infection other than relief of symptoms.
Treatment with antibiotics does not work and is not recommended. Over-the-counter medicines, such asacetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen can be used to treat fever. Aspirin should not be used in viral illnesses in children under age 12 years.
Salt water mouth rinses (1/2 teaspoon of salt to 1 glass of warm water) may be soothing if the child is able to rinse without swallowing. Make sure your child gets plenty of fluids. Extra fluid is needed when a fever is present. The best fluids are cold milk products. Many children refuse juices and sodas because their acid content causes burning pain in the ulcers.

Expectations (prognosis)

Generally, complete recovery occurs in 5 to 7 days.

Calling your health care provider

Call your health care provider if there are signs of complications, such as pain in neck or arms and legs. Emergency symptoms include convulsions.
You should also call if:

  • Medicine does not lower a high fever
  • Signs of dehydration occur:
    • Dry skin and mucus membranes
    • Weight loss
    • Irritability
    • Lethargy
    • Decreased or dark urine

Picture days!!

Adventure, newcomer, acclimation class pictures will be Monday
Maven and independence class pictures will be Tuesday
Discovery and horizon class photos will be Wednesday.
If you have sibling pictures and we couldn’t get your children’s class on the same day let me know which day you would prefer the sibling one done.
if you have not filled out a form and would like your child’s picture taken please contact me ASAP and I will try to fit your child in. Thanks!

New Building Progress

As many of you know, we have purchased a building for our current 2 schools to move to. Our location at 4800 40th Ave is being sold to investors to build (wait for it…) condos. Our current lease is up at the end of August, so when we come back from our end of summer closure we will all be in our new digs! This date is a little later then we hoped for. There were a couple of unfortunate time setbacks with the bank/SBA and the department of planning and development that were not in our favor. We are VERY excited about this move and that we will all be together in the same building, but it means financially we are getting creative to make it work paying for 3 buildings  (for the extended time frame) instead of 2 and construction costs on top of that. We have all started brain storming ideas to bring in some extra capital for the short term. A few of our ideas include, Friday night Date nights for parents to drop their children to us to get some adult time (2 nights have already filled up and a 3rd night has been added, thanks!), adult sports teams (co ed softball, volleyball, etc.), organized children’s sports/open kids gyms type weekend options, art auctions, Bake sales, participating in the west seattle community garage sale, etc. Many families have asked how they can help, I know how expensive childcare is and I want people to know that we are not asking you to give more of your hard earned money to support our school. We want to come offer ideas that can help you and your family and support our school at the same time. Many families have started coming up with ideas of their own and I am so appreciative of that. I’m writing this email to get more people’s ideas and communication going. Please respond to this email if…

1. you might be doing some spring cleaning and would like to get rid of baby toys, strollers, rockers, gently used clothing or shoes, board books, carriers/swings/seats, maternity clothes, old jewelry, furniture, etc. I will come pick up anything and everything with my truck to make it that much easier!

2. a couple of parents had the idea of paying in advance for tuition to receive a discounted rate, brilliant! So we figured out some details if anyone is interested in doing that. If you would like to pay in March for the next 10 months of 2014 tuition, we will give you a 4% discount on the entire total!

3. you love to play team sports and would be interested in getting to know other parents in our community while getting some exercise and having a great time, let me know what sports you would be interested in and we will be starting to make plans!

4. You can think of creative WIN/WIN ideas!

Here is a link to our youcaring page where we are documenting our efforts. If you have time to pass on information to friends and family that might be appreciative of our vision that would be so great! A few families have donated directly to this site and that Is so so amazing!

Date Nights

Hey Everyone,

Our first date night filled up very quickly, so we added a 2nd date of March 7th from 6:30-9pm for children ages 2-9 years old. If you are interested in using this for your child/ren you can respond to this email, text me, or wait to sign up on the sheet next week. First come first serve so I’ll let you know that I reserved your space right when I get your response! Were excited to offer this opportunity for families to get some kid free time!

We have scheduled our picture week for March 3rd 2014. Flyers will go out shortly with more details and packages available. We will be offering class pictures and individual pictures! If you are interested in ordering this yearly keepsake, please fill out and return the form ASAP so that we can schedule your child with the photographer!
